The Pilates Method
The Pilates Method
Pilates is a method of exercise that consists of low-impact body and spring-based resistance training developing the powerhouse/core strength, flexibility and muscle balance. Pilates is named for its creator, Joseph Hubertus Pilates, a German physical trainer who developed the exercises in the 1920s and taught in New York City until his eighties. Joseph Pilates work was handed down to some of his original students who carried on his legacy, who we now know as the Pilates Elders.
Pilates' work continues today through certified Pilates instructors around the world, gaining popularity because of its effectiveness to counteract the impacts modern-day influences that cause degenerating spines, poor posture and unbalanced muscles. The main goal of Pilates is to strengthen the muscles of the core, or powerhouse, to improve posture, stabilize and elongate the spine and develop balance and overall strength.
